Before choosing an operation, you are entitled to ask about anything. Tick the questions that matter to you and add your own.
About the indication
- Is surgery indicated in my situation? Why now?
- What are the other options, and what can I expect from them?
- Could a combination of medication and surgery be useful in my situation?
- What happens if I decide to wait?
About the choice of operation
- Which operation do you recommend, and why?
- Could operations other than the bypass and the sleeve be suitable? Where are they performed?
- How much long-term evidence is there on the proposed operation?
- Is this operation established in Switzerland, or only performed as part of a study?
- I have reflux, heartburn or diabetes: what difference does that make?
- I take medicines every day: will their effect change?
- I am planning a pregnancy: when will I be able to consider it?
- Can the operation be modified later if necessary?
About care in several stages
- My BMI is over 50: what preparation is planned before the operation?
- Is a two-stage procedure being considered for me? Why?
- Where would the operation take place, and who would provide my follow-up afterwards?
About medication before or after the operation
- Could a medicine help me during preparation? How would it be adjusted before the operation?
- If my weight stabilises too early or goes back up after the operation, could a medicine be added?
- Would this medicine be reimbursed in my situation?
About results
- How much weight can I reasonably expect to lose, and what do long-term studies show?
- What happens if I lose less than expected, or if I regain weight?
- What effects can I expect on my associated conditions?
About risks
- What are the risks during and just after the operation, in my case?
- What complications can occur years later?
- Which signs should make me call, and whom should I call?
About life after the operation
- How will I eat in the first weeks, and then in the long term?
- Which vitamins will I need to take, and for how long?
- How often will I have check-ups and blood tests?
- What about alcohol, contraception and sport?
- What support is available if things are emotionally difficult?
About organisation and insurance
- Where does the operation take place, and who will operate on me?
- How long is the hospital stay? When can I go back to work?
- Does my insurance cover the operation? What will I have to pay myself?
- Who will be my contact person after the operation?
